CGWM celebrate 15th Tag Rugby Festival with more than 400 local primary school children
1 May 2014
Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management has sponsored the Schools' Tag Rugy Festival since launch, and for 15 years the event has grown year on year attracting more school teams which has helped encourage an interest in playing and watching rugby in the island’s school children.
37 school teams, 117 games, involving more than 400 primary school children, took part in another exciting Annual Schools’ Tag Rugby Festival at the Garenne Stand at Footes Lane.
Tag Rugby is a non-contact version of rugby and is played in teams of seven players making it the perfect team sport for primary school children to take part in.
This competition is held for pupils in two age groups, school years 3&4 and 5&6 with teams in each group having an opportunity of winning at three stages of the festival, Cup, Plate and Bowl.
This year the Vale Vipers lifted the senior cup after a close final match against St Martin’s team, the Saints Smashers, winning five points to four. The La Mare Tigers took the cup in the year three and four tournament, battling it out in a very close final against the Vale Vixens, also winning by five points to four.
In the Plate competition the Castel Tigers beat the Notre Dame Wonders in the year five and six group and Tilly's Taggers from St Martin’s defeated the Castel Wallabies in the year three and four group.
The Bowl competition for years three and four was won by the Beechwood Moaris. Beechwood also won the senior competition with their team, the Beechwood Saxons.
The awards for most sportsmanlike teams were presented to Melrose in the senior tournament and Forest in the junior tournament.
Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management also sponsors the role of the Guernsey Rugby Development Officer. This was Steve Melbourne’s first schools' Tag Rugby Festival after being appointed to the role at the end of last year. Mr Melbourne has over 40 years of experience as a rugby player, coach and Rugby Football Union (RFU) coach educator.
"This was the 15th year of this competition and it seems to have grown year by year, which is great news for the future of rugby on the Island," said Mr Melbourne.
"Being my first major competition, I have been astounded by the level of support I have received from the Island's Primary Schools in producing the 37 teams, the Rugby Academy and Secondary schools that provided most of the support staff for the day and of course my sponsors Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management."
Andy Finch, Head of Wealth Management at Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management in Guernsey said: "We're pleased to support the Annual Schools' Tag Rugby Festival which involves so many of the island’s school children each year. It's encouraging to see the festival grow as the sport becomes more popular thanks to the hard work of the Guernsey Rugby Academy and Steve Melbourne.
"The weather was definitely on our side for this year’s festival which made for a great atmosphere! I would like to congratulate all the teams that took part."
