Local opera lovers had the opportunity to enjoy a musical repertoire from some of the most famous shows performed by the Guernsey Choral and Orchestral Society at their 'A night at the Opera' event.

The concert, which took place last month, was sponsored by Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management which enabled the Society to bring guest artists from the London opera scene to Guernsey to perform alongside local soloists, Tina James, Casey-Joe Rumens, Rhiain Taylor and Hannah Wickham.

The concert included popular excerpts from Strauss' Die Fledermaus, the Habanera and Toreador's song from Bizet's Carmen, Verdi's famous choruses, the duet from Bizet's Pearl Fishers and many more well-loved arias and choruses.

Guernsey Choral and Orchestral Society is a well-established, mixed-voice choir of about 100 singers. The society gives amateur singers the opportunity to take part in major choral works with the benefit of a full orchestral accompaniment in performance, with both amateur and professional soloists.

Helen Grand, conducting her last concert with the Guernsey Choral and Orchestral Society said: "It was a privilege to conduct such outstanding local and professional soloists, the Music Centre choir and the fabulous orchestra through the highlights of the opera world which was so warmly received by a capacity audience; a special night that I shall remember for a long time."

During the concert, the Chairman, Barbara Minta, expressed her thanks and appreciation for the support given: "Concerts of this quality are simply not possible without the generous sponsorship from Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management."
