Associate Analyst, Equity Research - Sector: Sustainability

Summary/Purpose of role

We are building a significant franchise amongst UK-listed corporates centred on sustainability, as corporate broker and financial advisor. We define sustainability broadly, including energy transition, agri-tech and forestry, circular economy, and water. At present we have 8 active corporate clients, with an ambition to more than double that over the course of the next twelve months, including delivering multiple IPOs.

Research has the job of providing thought leadership in the sector broadly, of finding and evaluating potential new corporate clients, of providing specific transaction support when there is capital to be raised, and of providing ongoing coverage of listed sustainability-related companies. Research works closely with numerous other departments, but in particular corporate broking, equity sales, private equity advisory, and other research teams in Canada, Australia and the US.

We are looking for an Associate Analyst to support our analyst currently working on the sector. We are particularly interested in improving our team’s understanding of current technologies and techniques across the sector. We would not expect an individual to have expertise across every sector, but to be able to extend their existing knowledge rapidly, and to be comfortable doing so. We already have deep capability in financial statement analysis and would expect a new hire to be able to learn the necessary skills on the job.

Role Responsibilities

  •  To support the Senior Analyst in providing research on a range of sustainability-related companies and themes, primarily to support capital raising.
  • Writing analysis of manufacturing and commercial processes that are common to numerous companies in a particular industry. Gathering, presenting and explaining key drivers that affect the relative cost, pricing, commerciality, and margin of a particular company.
  • Evaluating novel claims about the economics of new businesses, and writing internal analyses of these claims in a timely and concise fashion
  • Preparing key issues to be understood from and questions to be asked of management teams, and evaluation of responses.
  • Devising, gathering and maintaining data sets that allow us to track key characteristics of the market, eg. solar PV manufacturing capacity, commercial storage requirement, etc.
  • Supporting the Senior Analyst in preparing sector thematic analysis on various topics.
  • Conceiving, writing and maintaining the investment case for a specific company. Ensuring that all relevant factors are considered, commercial, reputational, individual and financial. Ensuring that all elements of the case are internally consistent and match real-world data.
  • Monitoring newsflow and corporate updates as appropriate.
  • Other tasks to support the Senior Analyst as required.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

  • Degree educated with a minimum 2:1 and/ or 2 years relevant sector experience. Strong preference for an undergraduate science or engineering degree.
  • An accountancy qualification would be desirable but is not essential.
  •  A strong interest in sustainability and the commerciality of the business sector.
  • Strong commerical awareness broadly.
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to distil complex problems into concise outputs.
  • Previous equity markets experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Advance Excel skills.
  • Knowledge of PowerPoint and Word.
