When you know William, you know our values.

It’s hard to say why William Jones is so passionate about learning every detail about challenging subjects. Maybe part of it was having a father who was a stockbroker, or perhaps it was because as early has he can recall, he liked a having a challenge and wanted to know about what interested him. “My passion for the markets started at a young age,” says William, “as a young teenager.”

Born and raised in Brisbane, he went away to a boarding school in Grades 7 and 8, which, William says, “instilled resilience.” After moving back to Queensland, he studied civil engineering and commerce. But after a brief time working in his area of study, he made a pretty major change in his career path. “What I was doing didn’t excite me,” he smiles.

So, he became a mining engineer in a coal mine. “I spent time in the pit. Got to understand the job from the bottom up, literally, and figuratively. I learned to respect the guys who worked there every day, and the value of a team, no matter experience or background. I learned some valuable lessons down there.”

That was William’s way into the industry. Now, as a Metals & Mining Research Analyst at Canaccord Genuity in Sydney, he brings his energy and insatiably curious mind to work each day. “I need to know how things work,” says William. Not only does he know the industry, he, loves it. “Metals and materials are the building blocks of the world. I get to look at the building blocks of our world, every day.”

He also loves CG’s entrepreneurial environment. “There is a real network of support here, even at my level. The people here are not just colleagues, they’re mates.”

William’s mind rarely shuts down, but when it does, it’s when he’s surfing. “I’m most at peace when I’m on my board waiting for a surf,” he says, reflectively. And while surfing has always been important to him, there is no debating his highest priority. “Family is very important to me. It’s number one.”

From this young but seasoned expert comes this advice: “Do the research. Learn the topic. If you put your mind to it, you can get it done.”
