International Women's Day 2022 - Lucy Ellis' story

24 March 2022

Tell us a bit about yourself

I studied Economics at the University of Leeds and had the opportunity to do a placement year at a wealth management company - that was my first experience of the industry.

After graduating, I joined a start-up and during my time there I completed the Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning. I joined Canaccord Genuity in London in October 2019 as a wealth planning assistant and then in May 2021, I was promoted to senior wealth planning assistant.

Currently, I’m continuing my studies and working towards achieving Chartered Financial Planner status, which I’m looking forward to.

Tell us more about your job. How do you serve our clients?

As a senior wealth planning assistant, I work directly with the financial planners to help onboard new clients, as well as dealing with existing client matters. My job involves liaising with clients, third party providers and other teams around the business, including many of the investment management teams. I enjoy working with others to achieve our departmental and company-wide objectives.

What keeps you at CGWM?

I see a clear career path and many opportunities available to me. My team are great people to work with and I feel well supported in my career progression and studies. CGWM continues to grow through various acquisitions and organic growth so It’s an exciting time to pursue and develop a career here.  As the business has grown, I’ve been able to get involved in a variety of tasks and gain more experience.

This year’s International Women’s Day focuses on #BreakTheBias. What does this mean to you?

Break the bias to me means challenging the industry. Industry wide, I’ve found that there typically tend to be more women in support roles compared to the senior and/or client facing roles. Women should feel empowered to pursue these roles should they want to. The right environment needs to be created to not only encourage more women to come forward but to cultivate emerging talent.
